Introduction
Ten years after the establishment of the Green Energy Center Europe in Innsbruck, two major Austrian newspapers reported on the anniversary and the presentation of Hyundai’s All-New NEXO.
While both articles focus on recent developments in hydrogen mobility, they also illustrate a broader systemic observation: the transition from isolated demonstration projects towards long-term operational hydrogen ecosystems remains an ongoing process across Europe.
From Demonstration to Operational Learning
When the Green Energy Center Europe was inaugurated in 2016 during the first hydrogen journey from Bergen (Norway) via Innsbruck to Bolzano (Italy), hydrogen mobility was still largely perceived as a demonstration technology.
Ten years later, the anniversary drive along the same Brenner Corridor was completed using three generations of Hyundai fuel cell electric vehicles, documenting a decade of technological development, operational experience and international cooperation.
Contrasting Developments
The Austrian media correctly point out the apparent contradiction between the launch of Hyundai’s latest NEXO generation and the closure of Austria’s public hydrogen refuelling stations. However, this observation represents only one part of the European picture.
At the same time:
- South Tyrol continues expanding hydrogen refuelling infrastructure.
- The European AFIR Regulation establishes mandatory infrastructure requirements along the TEN-T corridors.
- Hydrogen buses, trucks and regional hydrogen ecosystems continue to evolve throughout Europe.
These developments demonstrate that hydrogen mobility is increasingly becoming part of long-term regional infrastructure planning rather than isolated demonstration activities.
Operational Learning
Over the past decade, the Green Energy Center Europe Codex Partnership has documented this evolution through projects including:
- Hydrogen Highway Green Corridor
- Green Hydrogen for MPREIS, Tyrol and Europe
- Zillertalbahn Energy Autonompus with Hydrogen
- TIWAG Power to X Project Kufstein Langkampfen
- Hyundai Friendly User Hydrogen Families
- Demo4Grid
- HyWest
- HyTruck
- HyTrain
- HyBus
- HySnowGroomer
- HyDrone
- MOST
- HySelect
- TRIERES
- H2Cove
- REINFORCE
- FLEXI
- GEC Living Lab – operational local Green Hydrogen System
Together, these initiatives illustrate that successful transformation depends not only on technology but also on infrastructure, skills, coordination and continuous operational learning.
Media Reflection
The two newspaper articles provide an important snapshot of the current public perception of hydrogen mobility in Austria. Viewed together with long-term European developments, they illustrate both the remaining challenges and the continuing progress towards climate-neutral and autonomous regional energy systems.
