The tenth anniversary of the Green Energy Center Europe marks more than the presentation of a new fuel cell electric vehicle. It documents a decade of continuous cooperation between Hyundai Import GmbH and the Green Energy Center Europe Codex Partnership, demonstrating how long-term industrial collaboration, operational learning and regional implementation can contribute to the transition towards climate-neutral and autonomous energy systems.

Introduction

On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Green Energy Center Europe, Codex Partner Hyundai Import GmbH and the Green Energy Center Europe Codex Partnership presented the All-New Hyundai NEXO during a commemorative press event in Innsbruck. The event celebrated not only the launch of Hyundai’s latest generation of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), but also ten years of continuous cooperation between industry, research and regional implementation partners working towards the transformation of Europe’s energy and mobility systems. Rather than representing a single product launch, the anniversary illustrates how long-term industrial partnerships can become part of an operational research and innovation infrastructure supporting technological progress, infrastructure development and practical implementation.

Revisiting the Historic Brenner Hydrogen Corridor

On 16 June 2026, the anniversary press journey deliberately followed the same Brenner Corridor route travelled during the inauguration of the Green Energy Center Europe in June 2016. The journey connected Innsbruck with IIT Hydrogen in Bolzano, one of the Green Energy Center Europe’s longest-standing scientific and operational partners. Repeating the same European transport corridor after ten years created a unique opportunity to compare technological progress, hydrogen infrastructure and regional implementation under real operational conditions. During the anniversary drive, three generations of Hyundai fuel cell electric vehicles symbolically documented a decade of continuous technological evolution:

  • Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell
  • Hyundai NEXO
  • All-New Hyundai NEXO

Together they illustrate the remarkable progress achieved in fuel cell technology since the first hydrogen journey from Bergen via Innsbruck to Bolzano.

Ten Years of Industrial Partnership

The long-standing cooperation between Hyundai Import GmbH and the Green Energy Center Europe Codex Partnership demonstrates how industrial partnerships can evolve beyond individual vehicle demonstrations.

Over the past decade this cooperation has supported numerous implementation initiatives including:

  • Green Corridor Hydrogen Highway
  • Demo4Grid
  • HyWest Regional Hydrogen Economy
  • Hydrogen Skills
  • REINFORCE
  • FLEXI
  • H2CoVE

These initiatives collectively document the transition from isolated demonstration projects towards Operational Regional Hydrogen Systems (ORHS), where hydrogen mobility becomes an integral part of regional energy, transport and industrial infrastructures. The anniversary therefore celebrates not only technological innovation but also the value of long-term cooperation between industry, research organisations, public authorities and regional implementation partners.

IIT Hydrogen: A Long-Term Scientific Partner

The visit to IIT Hydrogen in Bolzano highlights another important aspect of the Green Energy Center Europe Codex Partnership. For more than a decade, IIT Hydrogen has accompanied the operational development of hydrogen technologies along the Brenner Corridor. Its continued commitment to hydrogen infrastructure deployment demonstrates how sustained scientific and industrial cooperation can successfully support the development of regional hydrogen ecosystems. The comparison between developments in Austria and South Tyrol also illustrates that hydrogen infrastructure evolves at different speeds across Europe while remaining part of a common long-term transition.

From Demonstration Projects to Operational Learning

The Hyundai anniversary video illustrates a broader transformation. Ten years ago hydrogen mobility primarily consisted of pioneering demonstration activities. Today it increasingly represents an operational learning process connecting:

  • vehicle technology
  • hydrogen infrastructure
  • renewable energy
  • industrial implementation
  • vocational education
  • regional innovation ecosystems
  • international cooperation

Within the Green Energy Center Europe Living Lab these developments provide valuable operational evidence for understanding how regional hydrogen systems gradually emerge through continuous learning and cooperation.

Looking Towards the Next Decade

The presentation of the All-New Hyundai NEXO therefore marks neither the conclusion of a project nor simply the introduction of a new vehicle generation. Instead, it documents ten years of continuous cooperation between Hyundai Import GmbH and the Green Energy Center Europe Codex Partnership while opening the next chapter of building climate-neutral and autonomous regional energy systems. The anniversary demonstrates that successful transformation is not achieved through individual technologies alone, but through long-term industrial partnerships, operational learning and the gradual convergence of research, infrastructure, education and regional implementation. The Green Energy Center Europe Codex Partnership remains committed to continuing this journey during the coming decade together with its industrial, scientific and public partners.
